Online Sales of Rhino Horn to be Investigated

February 21st, 2012

Advance Loan BlogAnything that sells for $10,000 a pound must draw attention, right?
People are selling anything and everything these days in order to raise a little extra cash, and some are doing very well in this business, especially by selling “old” or “unwanted” goods that have been cluttering up their homes for years. But going out hunting and getting one’s hands on horns that have been poached or sawn off freshly killed animals has to be pretty low on the list of money-making ideas.

Rhino horns
Rhino horns are now being advertised illegally online, amid unprecedented poaching levels and soaring black market prices paid for them by international criminal syndicates.
An easily available advert on the internet describes a rhino horn as a "legally-registered" antique from Cameroon which can be shipped to you at any time. The latest online advertisements come amid concerns that genuine “antique” trophy rhino horns are also being bought at auctions in the UK and Europe and exported to the Far East to be crushed for use in traditional Chinese medicine and other cultures for ornamental or pseudo-scientific medicinal purposes. Rhinoceros horns, unlike those of other horned mammals, consist of keratin only and lack a bony core, such as bovine horns. These horns are also used for dagger handles in Yemen and Oman.

Adverts
“We got rhino horn for sale. We can ship the horns to your home at any time,” according to a recent advert on the Kerawa.com website. A second advert in the “for sale” column of the same website’s Ethiopian section says that the horns for sale are all older than 30 years and were “legally registered antiques under the ministry of agriculture and wildlife in Cameroon”. Posing as an import and export agency, a newspaper responded to one of the advertisements on Monday and received a reply soon afterwards from a “Mr. Mark Kwazula” who provided a telephone number in Douala, Cameroon. Mr. Kwazula said the horns were from rhinos that were culled in 1955 and that they were well preserved.

Price
Although it remains uncertain whether the seller is authentic or simply an online scamster, “Kwazula” said in his e-mail that he was selling the horns at $3,350 a pound. This price is fairly low, as illegal wildlife trade monitoring groups suggest that the going black market price for rhino horn in Africa is $10,000 per pound, while the price paid in Vietnam for shaved and powdered rhino horn has reached between $10,000 and $15,000 per pound.

Go hunting
Can you see yourself buying a hunting rifle, a good expensive one, because if your first shot doesn’t do the trick you may have a problem outrunning a very angry rhino. Then after the huge animal drops to his knees and finally rolls over dead, you whip out your hacksaw or whatever it takes to remove the horn and sit patiently sawing away until the horn drops off and you can claim it as a true hunting trophy and put it up for sale. Yuch!

Save Money by Getting Free Ebooks Legally

February 20th, 2012

Advance Loan BlogAre there sales on eBooks? Sure there are!
I’ve got an iPad and I downloaded the free Kindle App. Now I’m looking for cheap books. There’s no need to keep a stack of books. My iPad/Kindle replaces them all. I’m thinking of joining the Philadelphia Free Library. For $15 per year, they offer out of state residents the ability to sign up for a library membership and use their downloadable free eBooks.

Outside the US
Those reading this from outside the United States by the way will be pleased to note that the Philadelphia Free Library is one of the very few online lending libraries available for international use. You’ll need to arrange for a U.S. denominated check or money order to send along with your application; however it should not be a problem to get in no matter where you happen to be in the world.

InkMesh
Another resource for those trying to find free eBooks is InkMesh. This is actually a meta search site which allows you to look for eBooks from more than a dozen online bookstores. The nice thing about it is that they also have a free eBook section. The good news is that the freebies are not just classics in the public domain. Modern books are often available at InkMesh for free, sometimes from popular authors. And yes, it’s 100% legal. The material is given away by the author or the publisher because they hope that once you’ve read one book by that person or publisher, you’ll want to spend the money to buy more of the same.

Baen Free Library
No list of places to get free, legal eBooks would be complete without mentioning the Baen Free Library. This company offers hundreds of downloadable eBooks free of charge. Their idea is that you can download the books and then, they hope that if you like them, you’ll come back to buy more books which aren’t free.

Mobile Read Forum
Finally, another great resource for finding free eBooks to download is the Mobile Read forum. Here, you can discuss eBooks and everything surrounding them. However, what is particularly useful is the deals section, where you can find member posted links to free, modern eBooks or discounts and coupons.

Kobo Books
Is almost always having a sale of some kind and the coupons are regularly posted at Mobile Read. Plus, for international readers, Kobo Books’ coupons often work internationally. This is also a great place to find free Kindle books (the Kindle is the only modern eReader incapable of reading protected eBooks from libraries as well as protected eBooks from anywhere except Amazon.com).

More
In most cases when you download free eBooks, they will come with DRM protection. This is a system designed to make sure you don’t go copying the books and passing them along to millions of your “friends” via the Internet.

On your computer
In order to read DRM protected eBooks from anyone other than Kindle, you’ll need to download Adobe Digital Editions. It’s a free piece of software which will load your books onto your eReader for you and takes care of the DRM protection scheme.

If You Are Retiring Don’t Rely On Living On Less

February 19th, 2012

Advance Loan BlogCost of living does not automatically drop the day you retire
We all assume we will need to spend less in retirement. But is this true? You have probably heard of the "income replacement ratio" – the amount of money you will receive after retirement compared with your pre-retirement salary. Most retirement plans will feature an income replacement ratio some way below 100%, partly because those planning for retirement and their financial advisers assume that monthly expenses will be lower.

Inflation
For those of us considering a clean-break retirement in our 60s, the prospect of inflation and rising living costs is scary. A research actuary at Alexander Forbes and university lecturer recently carried out research as part of her Master of Science degree, in which the income and expenditure profiles of around 3000 households were analyzed. According to findings, consumption did not decrease voluntarily at the point of retirement, and in fact some households reflected higher consumption, mostly due to increased spending on healthcare. Only households whose income was restricted actually made spending cuts. "If not limited by their lower incomes, these households would spend at similar levels to what they did while working."

Equivalent level
The research shows that if you’d like to maintain an equivalent level of household expenditure post-retirement, you may need to put away a greater lump sum than you expected to, particularly if you are single. She said most retirement funds used income replacement ratio targets of 70% to 79%, but research showed that even a replacement level of 79% was inadequate for at least 82% of single females and 88% of single males.

Couples
The picture for couples was less bleak, "particularly if the younger partner continued working after the older partner retired. That said, only about half of couples would find a target of 79% enough to avoid a consumption drop at retirement." What do the findings tell us? They leave you with four options:
  • delaying retirement and working part time or full time;
  • increasing your retirement savings rate;
  • increasing the return on your investments while still carrying an acceptable degree of risk;
  • having the younger partner in a couple continue to work when the older partner reaches retirement age.

Advice
Try to put away 10% to 15% of your total income as retirement savings, avoid dipping into savings before retirement, swallow the disagreeable pill of working until at least 67 and avoid the temptation of cashing in retirement savings when changing jobs.

The basic rule
The longer you work, the more you put away while you are still earning. According to Alexander Forbes, to retire at 60 the average household needs to have accumulated 14 to 18 times its annual income. But this reduces to 12 to 17 times with a retirement age of 65, and down to 10 to 15 times for retirement at 70. Their research also indicates that single women need to accumulate more than men, given that they can be expected to live longer.
